Every year, the Center for Advanced Studies awards two Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse Global Fellowships.

Each year, two Global Fellowships funded by the Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse / Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano are awarded. The selected Fellows are offered the opportunity to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team at the Center for Advanced Studies on topics of common interest, linking personal experiences and research with the Center’s expertise.
The focus of the Fellowship is dedicated to contemporary and future social, political and economic challenges. The Global Fellows will receive a grant, which is compatible with other non-related working duties, university studies or other research topics. Applications are limited to citizens from EU countries. We particularly encourage applications from people belonging to underrepresented groups in academic research.
The Global Fellows 2024 will be offered a research stay of up to four consecutive weeks at Eurac Research in Bolzano/Bozen, South Tyrol, Italy. The funded research stays’ timeframe will be agreed upon within 7 days from the notification of the award and they should be undertaken by December 2024 at the latest. During the research stay, each fellow will be required to be present at the office daily, actively engaging in the Center’s activities and contributing valuable insights to the research groups. They will have the opportunity to get to know the team and the ongoing projects and to use the Eurac Research facilities (e.g., Eurac Research Library). They are welcome to participate in all events and seminars as well as to explore opportunities for publishing their work (e.g., in joint publications organized at the Center, in the blog Imagining Futures or in the international journal New Global Studies).

Global Fellows 2023
Karoline Irschara
Karoline Irschara is a PhD candidate at the department of Linguistics at the University of Innsbruck with research interests in Corpus and Discourse Studies and Feminist Linguistics. She was involved in several research projects focusing on the connection between language and gender and is particularly interested in how this link affects medical discourse. In her doctoral project (submitted in May 2023), she worked on an extensive corpus of radiology reports by taking a Critical Medical Humanities perspective. Currently, she is involved in a FWF funded project in the field of Digital Humanities at the University of Innsbruck, which is concerned with the semantic annotation of a historical corpus.
Temenuga Trifonova
Temenuga Trifonova is Associate Professor of Creative Arts and Humanities at University College London. She is the author of The Figure of the Migrant in Contemporary European Cinema (2020), Warped Minds: Cinema and Psychopathology (2014), The Image in French Philosophy (2007), and the edited volumes Screening the Art World (2022), Contemporary Visual Culture and the Sublime (2017), and European Film Theory (2008). She has been the recipient of various research fellowships, including at CY Cergy Paris Université, Le Studium Centre for Advanced Studies, Waseda Institute for Advanced Studies (Tokyo), NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies, the American Academy in Rome, the Dora Maar House, and the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Bologna. She is a 2023 Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse Global Fellow at Eurac Research, Bolzano, Italy.

Irem Güney-Frahm
Irem Güney-Frahm studied in Istanbul, Bath and Berlin and has a disciplinary background in economics (Bachelor), European studies (Masters) and gender studies (PhD). Her work focuses on gender equality and globalization, international development, digitalization, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. As researcher and lecturer, Dr. Güney-Frahm has had stints at the Humboldt University Berlin, University of Edinburgh, University of St Gallen, ETH Zurich, Berlin School of Economics and Law, and Leuphana University Lüneburg. She also worked as researcher for the German Government's Third Gender Equality Report (2021).
Steven Umbrello
Steven Umbrello is the Managing Director of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. He studied philosophy of science and technology at the University of Toronto (H.B.A), epistemology, ethics, and mind at the University of Edinburgh (MSc), science and technology studies at York University (MA), and the ethics and design of AI at the Northwestern Italian Philosophy Consortium (PhD). His research focuses more broadly on value sensitive design, its philosophical foundations as well as its application to novel technologies like AI, nanotech, and Industry 4.0.

Maarten Jan Wensink
Maarten Jan Wensink holds a PhD in Medicine and Philosophy from Leiden University in the Netherlands. He worked as a PhD student and Post Doc researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany before taking up a position as Assistant Professor at the Max Planck Odense Center at the University of Southern Denmark. Since February 2021, Maarten is Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark at the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography. His current projects include the statistical and epidemiological analysis of paternal medication use in the months preceding conception and potential effects on offspring, as well as theoretical work on population dynamics and aging.
Bartosz Stefan Michalski
Bartosz Stefan Michalski holds a PhD habil. in Economics with a specialization in International Economics from the University of Economics, Wrocław, Faculty of National Economy. Since July 2019, he is Associate Professor at the Institute of International Studies at the University of Wrocław. His core responsibilities include academic teaching & research, PhD co-supervision, peer reviewing, academic advising and student engagement. His research interests focus in particular on trade regionalism in the contemporary global economy, competitiveness of economies, international trade, structural transformation as well as technological change.
