LICHT – Local Identities and Cultural Heritage in Transition

Project description

As a result of complex historical processes, South Tyrol hosts different communities, both autochthonous and allogeneic, and is characterised by a wide linguistic and cultural variety. Cultural differences are encountered daily by citizens in educational, work and leisure contexts, sometimes in households or friend networks. Although this diversity has often been represented as a juxtaposition (and clash) of monolithic identities, nowadays the situation is more complex. Therefore, the concept of cultural hybridity could offer a key toward understanding the ongoing processes of intercultural and cross-cultural exchanges that take place in everyday interactions.

Based on the assumption that individual experiences within different language groups vary significantly, this project focuses exclusively on German-speaking South Tyroleans. Thereby, we hope to gain a better understanding of the potential discrepancy between official national (Italian) identity and cultural identity. The research project can also be used as a basis for further research with regard to other language groups. Three research questions are at the centre of the project:

  • How does cultural hybridity work in South Tyrol?
  • How do people define their sense of belonging?
  • How do people cope with cultural hybridity in everyday life?

Approximately 20 interviews with members of the German-speaking community will be conducted, asking them about their everyday life experiences of cultural diversity. The qualitative analysis of the data collected during the interviews will help to shed light on individuals’ self-perception of cultural identities and strategies to navigate a culturally diverse social context. The goal is to contribute to the ongoing transnational scientific debate on cultural diversity, developing an original and data-based approach.
