Webinar series: Federalism and the Law of Diversity: Islands or archipelago?

The Theoretical Contribution of Federalism for the Explanation of Emergent Models for the Accommodation of Diversity

Today, the "law of diversity", i.e. the body of instruments for the accommodation of diversity, and federalism appear to be more complex, less straightforward, and much more deeply connected than a traditional reading may indicate. Accordingly, rather than being separated and occasionally connected islands, they may be seen as part of an archipelago, their theoretical connections being structural and deep, as is increasingly apparent in contemporary times. It seems indeed that today more evident convergence and overlaps between federalism and the law of diversity are observable since they both increasingly refer to the ideas of governance and legal pluralism. The latter concepts might be regarded as the common theoretical ground for the mentioned areas of research, the stretches of sand that bridge supposedly isolated islands below the surface of the water.

The series of webinars aims to put in operation the mentioned deep connection – with specific regard to non-territorial autonomy, legal pluralism, and participatory democracy – in order to verify if this could lead to improving our understanding of some phenomena by contributing to their theoretical framing and consequent development.
