Langjährige und interdisziplinäre Messkampagnen sind Grundvoraussetzung um die komplexen Aus- und Wechselwirkungen des Klimawandels in Bergregionen beschreiben und erklären zu können. Aufbauend auf die im Rahmen des Projektes Klimawandel Südtirol errichtete Messstruktur sollen im Matschertal verschiedene wissenschaftliche Ansätze vereint und langfristig verfolgt werden. Konkret sollen langfristig 1)Prozessanalysen, 2)manipulative Experimente und 3)Transektbeobachtungen auf verschiedenen Skalen (Plot-bis Landschaftsebene) und in verschiedenen Landnutzungsformen (Mähwiese, Weide, Wald) angewandt, verglichen und idealerweise miteinander kombiniert werden. Um den Untersuchungen eine breitere Internationale Sichtbarkeit zu geben und zudem die vor Ort gewonnenen Ergebnisse in einen noch breiteren Kontext zu stellen, wird angestrebt mit den Versuchsflächen dem LTER Netzwerk beizutreten. Darüber hinaus sollen einige der Messflächen der NASA als Kalibrier- und Validierungsinput für satellitenbasierte Bodenfeuchtemessung fungieren.
