From 11th to 14th December 2022 GLOMOS co-organised a workshop which brought together over 50 people from around the Maloti-Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho and South Africa to establish a Community of Practice for the Safeguarding of these mountains. The participants represented a broad range of stakeholders: traditional leaders, government ministries, conservation practitioners, NGOs, community development associations, universities, scientists and UN agencies. During three days of intense discussion and exchange on the current state and aspirational future of these shared mountains, information gaps were identified and new relationships built. The aim of the Community of Practice is to foster collaboration between all the different stakeholders in order to tackle the multidimensional and transnational issues facing the mountains and their communities. The video below/above explains the importance of the Maloti-Drakensberg mountains for local and regional food and water security, and participants reflect on the three days spent together during the Community of Practice workshop.
