Paola Fontanella Pisa Awarded at Eurac Research’s 2024 Science Slam

The Center for Global Mountain Safeguard Research (GLOMOS) is proud to announce that Paola Fontanella Pisa has won the first prize in the second night of the 2024 edition of Eurac Research’s prestigious Science Slam.

A Science Slam is an exciting competition where scientists present their research to a general audience in a dynamic and accessible way. The goal is to engage, inform, and entertain, making complex scientific concepts relatable for everyone. Participants have just a few minutes to capture the audience’s attention and convey their findings creatively.

Paola’s winning presentation, titled “How can stories save us? - from disasters,” explored how anthropological studies can shed light on the ways people experience and respond to disaster risks. Drawing from her research in Japan's Fukushima region, a mountain UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Paola highlighted the power of storytelling and cultural understanding in disaster preparedness and resilience.

Through her compelling talk, she demonstrated how the lived experiences and narratives of individuals in disaster-prone areas can inform strategies to better protect communities and foster a deeper connection between people and their environment.
