The UN General Assembly adopted the initiative to declare 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and to proclaim 21 March of each year the World Day of Glaciers, to be starting in 2025. UNESCO and WMO in cooperation with governments and relevant organizations of the UN system including UNU are invited to take appropriate steps to organize the implementation of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and observance of the World Day of Glaciers and develop necessary proposals on all activities. On 7 July 2023 UNESCO organised a brainstorming session about key milestones, communication and research activities within the context of this dedicated year and day. Stefan Schneiderbauer, Head of the Centre GLOMOS, participated in the brainstorming panel and underlined

    • the need to mainstream mountain issues into policies and funding schemes not centred around on mountain topics,

    • the efforts, GLOMOS will undertake to acquire scientific projects in the field of impact of and adaption to retreating glaciers,

    • the preparedness of GLOMOS to contribute to monitoring and analysing of changes in the cryosphere supported by other Eurac institutes and UNU-EHS divisions.
