Kick off TRANS-SAHARA Project

A pioneering an innovative approach to leveraging agroforestry systems for climate resilience in Africa

This project brings together a diverse network of partners working to strengthen agroforestry systems in Africa, enhancing their resilience to climate challenges while promoting sustainable management practices. By combining expertise and innovation and by integrating the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus approach, this initiative seeks to enhance the management and sustainability of agroforestry systems, driving impactful change for communities and ecosystems.

Our role in the project focuses on reducing the data gap by developing novel data collection and modeling strategies. Specifically, our team will:

    • Develop and manage an integrated hashtag#DataManagementSystem that combines remote sensing and in-situ sensing methods, ensuring efficient and scalable data collection.
    • Design and implement “Made in Africa” in-situ sensor technology, in collaboration with WASCAL Climate, using locally available components and tools. This ensures easy maintenance and supports capacity building in the region.
    • Collect, categorize, and integrate data into an advanced agroforestry systemic database, enhancing decision-making and resource management.
    • Create an Agroforestry Intervention Design Tool to guide sustainable agroforestry practices and maximize impact.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement 101182176.
