EU HE METABUILD: Powering the METAmorphosis of BUILDings towards a decarbonised and sustainable energy system

The overall vision of the project METABUILD is the electrification of the heating sector through: heat pump systems; Integration of RES & storage; Building digitalisation and intelligence with smart energy management systems. Social acceptance and strict adherence to energy efficiency measures will be ensured to promote a sustainable, efficient energy use and an affordable pathway to decarbonise the building-sector heating. A holistic approach addresses challenges throughout the building life cycle, including product manufacturing, energy solution design and engineering, construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance.

META BUILD (from the Greek work ‘μετάβαση / metavasis’, which means transition) aims to operationalise EE First Principle in the practical context of buildings, products and services, engaging all the building value-chain and relevant stakeholders in designing and implementing electrification strategies of the thermal energy demand of buildings. We will act as a smart orchestrator and added-value service, streamlining the currently fragmented space between buildings, construction horizons and usages to improve electrification-by-design. To achieve the ‘META BUILD of the building sector’ we will develop and demonstrate at TRL 6-8 highly cost-effective, integrated and replicable solutions (i.e. HPs coupled with RES and energy storage systems) for electrifying thermal energy demand in buildings. Social acceptance and strict adherence to EE measures will be ensured to promote sustainable, efficient energy use and a solid decarbonisation pathway for the building sector. A holistic approach addresses challenges throughout the building life cycle, including product manufacturing, energy solution design and engineering, construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance.
Focus will be given in both construction and renovation phases of a building, while different types of buildings (residential, non-residentials) will be used driven by the need to address the challenges of the building complexity. We will demonstrate solutions in strategically chosen buildings to ensure the greatest possible replication and exploitation, ultimately achieving the highest possible impact in terms of transforming the building sector. The highest share of the META BUILD buildings that will be used as Front Runners and Replication Multipliers is from the residential sector (single-family and multi-family homes) as they account approximately the 75% of the total building stock. The other typologies under transformation through the META BUILD solution are commercial buildings (15% of the building stock) and especially office buildings, retails and non-residential that provide services (educational buildings).
