Breeding and varietal innovation on pear at CREA Research Centre for Olive, Fruit and Citrus Crops - Giuseppina Caracciolo (CREA Forlì - Italien)

Italian pear cultivation is characterized by the predominance of some well-known and consumer-appreciated old varieties (Abate Fétel, William, Conference, Coscia, Decana del Comizio, Kaiser). The pear breeding program carried out by the department of Forlì of CREA Research Centre for Olive, Fruit and Citrus Crops aims to achieve a varietal innovation that follow the consumer's preferences. The focus is therefore on the organoleptic quality of the fruit and the agronomic characteristics of the plant. In particular, research is increasingly directed toward a higher environmental sustainability. Varieties from the ancient pear germplasm having some interesting agronomic and organoleptic characteristics are also used as part of this breeding program.
