Webinar on Terminology and Inclusion

Our researchers Elena Chiocchetti and Natascia Ralli will be part of the next webinar, to be held online on 13 March 2025 at 15:00 CET, organised within the series of EAFT Conversations by the European Association for Terminology (EAFT).

The webinar consists in a brief introduction and three short talks on “Terminology and Inclusion: Dimensions, Applications and Limitations”, followed by a Q&A session.

The introduction by Elena Chiocchetti provides an overview on relevant dimensions, such as gender, ethnicity and age. It also addresses the role of terminologists related to neology, standardisation, termbase quality etc. The first talk by Chantal Reid and Karin Rondeau concerns the Canadian Government’s approach to linguistic inclusion and to handling terms that can be considered inappropriate or discriminating (e.g. hotel reservation, Squaw Lake). The second talk by Natascia Ralli and Elisabeth Evers addresses the challenges and impact of inclusive terminology on termbases, starting from a key question: is gender a property of objects or a characteristic of concepts? The last talk by Michal Měchura discusses the advantages, disadvantages and practicality of implementing different proposals in terminology databases.
