Development

Within the project H2020 HotMaps, Eurac Research has developed a building stock database with regard to the entire EU (country-by-country). The analysis has been carried out for the residential sector (single-family houses-terraced houses, multifamily houses and apartment blocks) as well as the service sector (offices, health, trade, education, hotels and restaurants – bars and other non-residential buildings – sport facilities, airports, military barracks etc.).

The existing EU buildings have been subdivided in construction vintages, following the classification provided by the building observatory. For each of the above mentioned building categories and construction periods following features have been retrieved:

  • constructed area,
  • heated area,
  • cooled area,
  • tenure,
  • occupancy,
  • u-values,
  • construction methods,
  • construction materials,
  • H&C technologies,
  • fuels utilized,
  • specific energy demand and consumption
  • total energy demand for heating, cooling and DHW

The database entails about 150,000 data.
This database is currently under further revision/elaboration in the H2020 BuiltHub research project.

Features

  • identify the location of current heating and cooling demand as well as supply on a map for EU28;
  • identify renewable energy potential to supply heating and cooling for a selected area;
  • identify waste heat potential from industrial facilities within a selected area;
  • estimate the potential for efficient district heating options within a selected area;
  • estimate and compare the costs of individual heating vs. district heating options within a selected area;
  • develop scenarios for decarbonisation pathways of heating and cooling.
